Question C-Media AC97 Problem, Fresh Install, Code 39

Hi, thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help. I have been a few days trying to sort this to no avail.

New HDD, Clean install of winxp without speakers plugged in, added and updated AVG anti-virus, updated to sp2, plug speakers in, no sound . checked device manager and yellow exclam against C-Media AC97 audio device...properties...Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)...

I have tried uninstalling, re-installing from windows update, motherboard cd that came with pc and asrock and c-medias websites for latest drivers...no joy

have tried deleting the device and re-installing, checking bios to ensure wudio is on either auto or enabled and it is...checked forums and googled it for hours and cant seem to find a solution...

dxdiag says there is an error under the audio tab...

can anyone help ?

Details from Windows and Belarc listed below...thanks a lot in advance

Please help and thanks

First look at this from M$ on error code 39 solution http://support.microsoft.com/default...22120121120120

if no joy then try solution below

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Go here to AsRock http://www.asrock.com/support/downlo...Model=775VM800

install the chipset drivers, the Via 4 in 1 drivers RESTART your comp
then install audio drivers again

Hope this helps

Thanks for the help, i appreciate it.

I had already tried the microsoft *solutions* to no avail, but have tried them again.

DL and installed the via 4 in 1 drivers, as suggested, and then the audio drivers again from the motherboard cd

Still no sound, any more suggestions ?

Thanks again...

Ok, let Device Manager install the drivers for you, put MoBo CD in driver then close, got to Device Manager, anything with a yellow exclamation mark, right click, select Update driver and follow instructions. Device manager will find the driver on the disc and install.Take a look at this for more information http://www.techhelpforum.com/softwar...2972-page.html

Hope this helps

Thx. Tried your method and the one at the url, device manager had already done this a few times but did it step by step in both suggestions. Still no sound...I have noticed that the c-media ac97 audio device is listed under sound, video and game controllers and in the View By Connection ius listed under PCI bus which is under Microsoft ACPI-compliant system...i assume this is correct... Do you think it might be a duff motherboard ?

one last thing. when i first used windows update i used the express option, second time around i used custom and noticed that under hardware was the dreaded c-media ac97 so i have not installed this, presumably the express installation installed it..i dont know that it is faulty but this was my resolution..end of problem...thanks to those that helped
