Flash player problem with XP. Please help if possible.
Hi there. I have a problem with XP (possibly settings??) that stop me from being able to download Macromedia's Flash Player from the website - http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/d.../download.cgi?
When I click on the Install Now button, a red cross appears where there should be a movie, and nothing happens after this.
I am in the dark ages atm with dialup, but I've left it on for over 15 minutes after I click on the Install Now button, and this is well past what the site itself claims should be enough for dialup (6 mins for dialup on 56k).
I'm not able to obviously view any flash websites and other graphic-rich content because of this inability to download and install the Flash Player.
Would anyone be able to lend some assistance as to what might be causing this problem? Is it something in the browser settings I could possibly check for, or am I missing something I need to get from Microsoft's website?
Other than this, I don't have any problems at all with my system or viewing / browsing the 'Net.
Thank you for any help you might be able to lend to this problem for me.
Lee.

Check your Internet security settings on the browser, it may be cranked up too high. I would suggest the customize setting and go through the options one at a time. That may not help, but it's well worth a try.
I'm on dialup too, the only other option I have here in the hills of Tennessee is sattelite, and I'm not ready to do that until I keep evaluating the providers. So far Directway and Dish Network both pretty well suck, not to mention the inherent latency.

For me, money isn't a problem, it's availability. I'm about 25 miles north of Memphis, cable and DSL simply aren't an option; it's not available. It's dialup or satellite.
Satellite connections are dicey at best and I'm not sure which one I'm ready to commit money to. The latency issue just has to be dealt with if one is using satellite.

Phippy - thank you for your suggestion. I'm not on my computer at present but I will be this evening, so I'll definitely have look at the Custom settings and see how I go.
oldtimer - I would have cable here in a flash (pardon the pun), but the telecommunications company here in Australia hasn't laid cable out to the new estate I'm living in yet. It is apparently scheduled to be put in toward end of year or 1st quarter next year.
With regard to the Pop Up blocker ... I thought that too, as I run Super Ad Blocker, but even after I Exit the blocker, then re-try downloading the Flash player, the same problem occurs .... it's as though it just doesn't want to download the Player.
No site windows to let me know its happening, no movie where the placeholder says it should play on the macromedia website after a successful download / install .. nothing.
It's a real mystery to me, but I will try Phippy's suggestion of going over the security settings this evening, to see if it makes any difference.
Any other ideas or solutions I could try would be gratefully received.
Lee

Hi ... If you are using Internet Explorer ? Then you can disable Macromedia's Flash Player by going to the following
Open IE >> Tools >>> Manage Add Ons >> Select from the drop down menu ( Show ) " Add ons that have been used by Internet Explorer " Now look for
Macromedia's , Then select the disable option there

OK,
Thanks to all who have helped here .. I may have found part of the problem ..
Phippy, I checked all the settings in the browsers Security Custom Level settings, and they all matched two other friends computers' settings, so that one seems to be OK.
snooker, I went into those settings you gave me: Open IE >> Tools >>> Manage Add Ons >> Select from the drop down menu
( Show ) " Add ons that have been used by Internet Explorer ", as well as "Add Ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer", and I could find no mention of any Macromedia application at all .. no Shockwave ActiveX no Shockwave Flash, nothing at all relating to Macromedia at all.
Would it be better for me just to do a fresh install from the Windows XP CD to replace the Flash player, or is there another way to fix this problem?
Thanks again everyone for your help ... it is greatly appreciated by this unashamed computer newbie.

My mistake , I thought there for a second you wanted to disable flash , To many drinks last night lol , If you are having internet problems ? Why not try to load shockwave flash onto a floppy from maybe one of your friends computer , then afterward you can try to load from there
Or if its to big for floopy , try to burn onto disk if you can
