Explorer.exe automatically resets

Hi Everyone.

Please can someone offer up some advice?

Just recently when I click on a icon (either desktop or via the start menu) explorer.exe automatically resets, closing all open windows in the process. There is no error message at all.

It happens about 50% of the time and can even happen in the middle of using software itself or when a disc is inserted.

I've checked for viruses (nothing) and run sfc /scannow with no luck.

Has anyone any ideas - can I rule out hardware for instance, or am I left with re-installing XP?
