windows xp logon problem please help

hello friends,
I'm having problem with windows login. after i give my administrator password it says that it is unable to load the profile due to some corrupt local file and it will start the windows with a local profile. Any changes made in this profile will be lost after the computer is restarted. I have to set proxy setting every time I logon. the worst problem is that there is no sound and the controls are blocked and says no audio device. . Any suggestions???
1) Version of XP: Professional
2) Hardware setup: 256 MB ram, 1.2 ghz hdd, lan connected, sp1.
3) What exactly happened leading up to the problem: I think after I installed the automatic update sus file suggested by our lan administrator, this happened.
4) Exact error messages: as explained earlier.
5) Any antivirus, firewall software you are running: AVG antivirus

Make a new user account in safe mode and put this as an administrator account, delete your account and choose yes to save files.

These will then be put on in to a file on your desktop.

Sometimes it works, but sometimes the corrupt files can transfer to your new account.
