So one night a couple weeks ago, I left my computer burning a DVD when I went to bed. When I got up in the morning, it had rebooted itself, which isn't unusual. The unusual part is that when I went to log into Windows, the screen started flashing. First it was just a flicker, but it got worse until the display was simply cutting out entirely for increasingly long periods of time. Now it will only show up for a few seconds at a time before flashing off, and then the screen is often highly distorted and frizzy.
It works fine in Safe Mode, but not in VGA mode. The problem starts as soon as normal Windows starts to load (the Windows screen starts flashing, as does the welcome screen).
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200. The only changes to my system since the last reboot was an iTunes upgrade (since uninstalled) and an overnight normal Windows update (also uninstalled with no effect). I have tried updating my display drivers, reinstalling them from the original disk, system restore, the Windows repair console, and a repair reinstall of Windows. The problem has only gotten worse.
I'm about ready to bag it and just start fresh with a clean hard drive. But of course, I'd rather not, if any wise guru can help me find a better solution. Help?
