Question XP product key

If i format my drive, why cant I reuse the product key on the sticker on the key?
Do i have to call Microsoft to get a new one?
If so what info do they need and what should I tell them?

You should be able to use the product key however many times you reinstall XP. Have you tried it?

Hi, If your computer is a Dell, Compaq or something lik that the you will need to have the Recovery CDs to install your Windows. Calling Microsoft does not solve any problem cos' they will send you straight to your Computer provider and then your Computer Provider will charge you the shipping costs of sending you the recovery discs if your computer has a valid waranty... if the waranty has expired then they will charge you some amount for the Discs and will provide you a new key... The key in the compurer sticker its just for nice looking if you used a diferent CD installation than the Recovery disks, in which case will never ask you for the CD Key... So dont waiste your time and go straight to your provider...

In my personal experience I called the Provider of my system and they wanted to charge me for sending me those CDs, even when they never gave me a kit when I bought the computer the first time... My solution was easy... I have messed uround with the Activation... there is a lot of tools out there to do such a thing... I'm not spending money in those recovery CDs at all... What the hell do they think they are? They want more and more of your money... wtf!! Yeah, just get a windows activation nasty tool and that's it

Hope this help

You can update windows by messing with the activation... Shearch for a good tool... almost all of them let you use the Windows update...

Wait, Waity, wait... Let me get This right... You can't install Windows cos' the Key is not been accepted right??? cos' In that case I will need know some info about the Installation CD you have... Is it XP Home?, Pro?, SP2?, Anyone could provide you a key... actually you can find one at *removed* BUT you need to know whcih Windows are you trying to install...

Yoni5002º....word of advise... you got to tone it down with Crack this and hack that .....it is unwritten rule of any forum the you should not discuss this publicly....Please remember that big brother is always watching for this kind of stuff and they could put the site own under lots of unwanted stress.

mdmd, the reason your CD key did not work was because, your CD key is for an OEM version and you were using that to install Full or Corp version of XP. You may reinstall the XP as many time as you want but you need to call Microsoft to Activate it..."THAT'S IT" .......Usually, if the computer is shipped with Recovery CD then that's all you are going to get from manufacturer....they WILL NOT SHIP YOU A STAND ALONE XP CD.

Cheers

snowmonkey has it right. And if you are simply re-installing from recovery disks provided with the PC, you won't be asked to enter a cd key at all.

I'm surprised the moderator of this forum hasn't removed those posts referring to cracks and such like. Totally out of order in my opinion. Such references should be restricted to private messages -- better still not referred to at all.

I concur with snowmonkey.

I, personally, am not having a go at you, yoni5002. That's not my style. However, (users deliberately advertising/advising sites, cracks, hacks, etcetera, have been warned, etcetera) for the 'misuse' of forum space, for want of a better word.

Once again, I'm not knocking you, or your advice; it's just a heads up kind of thing.

Peace.

I have been using the same XP home disc that came with my Compaq when it first came out and each time I have to reinstall the OS I just call up Microsoft . Then I say that I had to reformat the drive and when reinstalling it I was unable to, and they give you an activation number. BTW, do all of this through the Windows activation prompt for telephone #s and such.

Actually, you are completely wrong yoni5002.
First, You posted a link to a crack site. Anyone clicking that link here, will place this board's URL in the server logs of that site, thus this board could become associated with warez.
In certain places that can lead to a conviction, and certainly many hosts don't want to be associated with such material.
You obviously weren't here when XP was released. Ask "The Tool".

You will go to jail if you get caught? Your IP and mail addy are on record here. A simple process will reveal your whereabouts. Rather than chastize others attempting to help, you should be more carefull of what you say, and where you say it. Contrary to what you think, you may land yourself, and others in trouble.

Nobody has to be a Mod to look after the interests of the board. There is a report button on every post, so these things can be drawn attention to. I reported your post, as is expected of me. You should be reprimanded for placing this board in a possible difficult position. Something that caused problems in the past.

What makes you think that? Thats your personal opinion, right?
What do you mean when you say "REPRIMANDED"... are you serious?? anyways you have the right to report whatever you want. I will waite for the moderators to see if my post is not permited or if it has violated any of the forum rules... If my post HAS VIOLATED THE FORUM RULES I WILL BE THE 1st ONE IN ERASE IT OUT...
Hey THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW ABOUT MY e-mail ADRESS AND MY IP I can personally provide you the information as well if you just ask me...

yoni5002,
Please no links to warez stuff.

Microsoft does keep an eye on all websites and contacts the datacenter asking to take the server down if the link is not removed. They have contacted me many times when someone posted Windows XP Key or download link.
