explorer.exe eating up CPU

My explorer.exe randomly uses 99% of my CPU. this stae will not end unless i close explorer, which results in the power fix either ending or restarting. some peope told me it was an issue with AVI files. i deleted the specified registries, but the problem persists. Any ideas???

Sounds like spyware. Go to the microsoft web site and download windows defender. Run the scan until it removes all spyware files on your computer.

I would also run disk clean up.

JAZZ already covered everything; I’ll just add two misc. notes:

1. Get http://www.stevengould.org/software/.../download.html and run it first to minimize scan time.
2. http://hijackthis.de/ will help you analyze your log.

This is a well known component of a Spyware program called SpyAxe.exe

My steps are as follows:

Download : Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 and run a full system scan
Download : Webroot Spy Sweeper 4.5 and run another FSS
Download : Trial of McAfee Security Suite and run full virus and spyware scan
Download: Hijackthis and do a scan and post your log on here.
Download: ZoneAlarm Security Suite and run scan and keep the blocker running
Download: Webroot Desktop Firewall and keep running
Remove: Any unnecesary programs in Add/Remove on WinXP
Remove: Any unnecesary running programs using CTRL+ALT+DEL

If there are any other symptoms after this please come back

Thanks,
Michael
