dvd/cd-rw combos are usually DVD-ROM and CDRW drives in which you can only burn cd's not dvds....and only play dvds

now if it is a dvd burner which has both dvd and cd writing then in smart start there should be a option at the top as soon as you open it that you can change between the CD and DVD...if it doesnt have it then yours is just a CD burner and a DVD reader

You will have to restart your computer and go into your BIOS

On start-up you should see a thing at the bottom of your screen what says System set-up (usally have to hit F2 or delete)

Once in there go to Advanced Bios Features and hit enter
then you should see Boot Seq & Floppy set-up and hit Enter
then use your arrows and highlight the First boot device...enter
arrow down until you have it on USB-HDD and hit enter
now hit F10 and it should come up as save changes...hit Y and then enter

now it should boot up from your USB Hard drive

If you dont see a USB-HDD then you will probably have to see if there is an update for your BIOS
