Question Any ideas why my PC keeps on freezing???

Hi all,

I am having trouble with my PC recently, firstly it kept on rebooting itself. I had disconnected the hard drive, graphics card, RAM etc and connected them together again. Checked the temperature of the PC, it was a little too warm at first but cooled down after everything was connected up again and running.

The next day after the computer had cooled down, it managed to boot up the XP Pro OS with no bother. It was left on all day and no problems arised until I decided to use it

I loaded up applications like Outlook and the computer started freezing

I reset the computer and it managed to load up the OS and once again once I loaded up an application it started to freeze again. I thought it could be the hard drive but I noticed the screen went slightly green once the computer was booting up XP.

Can anyone tell me if it could the hard drive, graphics card or something else thats causing this problem (e.g. virus) ???

Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

If you can get to Event Viewer it may throw some light on the problem
Right click My Computer / Manage /Event Viewer / expand Event Viewer / look for Red Crosses in Applications & System / right click / Properties / Error Report dialogue box opens / a description of fault with a link to M$ Help & Support for a possible solution.

Make a note of link if you can't connect from your comp and try on another. I used Event Viewer when a new DVD would not work, M$ solution was a cable fault, changed cable everything OK

if you think it may be Viruses, then a Repair Install, is another way to go, you won't lose data or settings, thought it does look like a new install when it starts, you will need a Win XP cd. Take a look here on how to http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hope this helps

Give us some hardware details Dave, cpu, video card, ram, temperatures, psu (especially amps on the 12v rail)
Have you run things like Memtest86 to ensure it is not a ram problem?
from the symptoms it sounds as if it may be heat related, have you checked out the cpu heatsink for dust build up etc?

Morning (or evening there I guess) Barbara
