Depends how the cable modem is connected to the PC. If it's connected by a USB cable then you need to install the driver for it which should be on a CD supplied by your cable provider or modem provider.

If it is connected via usb with no driver you would not get an error saying "Network Cable Unplugged" so it has to be ethernet. The best thing to do is contact your ISP to see what type of connection you have. If it's DHCP then it should just work, however a lot of cable internet providers also use a PPPoE connection. In that case you would have a userid and password that you'd have to create a "dialer" from the network connections control panel in XP.
Either way your ISP should be able to tell you how to connect properly.

Lightbulb

First:
A. Turn off the computer.
B. Unplug the modem power cord then disconnect the coaxial cable from your modem [input cable from your cable service]. Leave them unplugged for at least a minute then reconnect the coaxial cable then the modem power cord. Start your computer then after the modem green lights stabilize, attempt to connect.
C. If no connection after B above; Control Panel/Network Connection/Local Area Connection/Support Tab/click the Repair button.

You don't need to unhook the coax cable. I work for an ISP that does docsys cable, dsl, and wireless.

Your cable can be one of two connection types - DOCSYS or PPPoE
If it's DOCSYS then you'll be assigned an IP address automatically just by connecting a computer to the modem. If it's PPPoE you'll have to use a software connection with a userid and password to connect.

Either way it's pretty simple and it will take your ISP a few seconds to tell you what type you have and how to connect.
