windows xp standalone?

I was wondering if there is a way to install windows xp by itself without having to install another version of windows first. If i format and just try to install Xp i get a message that says something like it can't be installed without having a current version of windows already installed. And if anyone is wondering i do have a full version of Windows Xp so i know that it isn't the case of me having an upgrade version. If anyone can help please reply ASAP. I am in the process of formatting now and would like to reinstall just XP if possible. Thanks.

thats because the Windows CD you have is an upgrade only version, rather than a stand-alone install version - as far as I know there is no way to do it - but if you slap on 98 first, it should not take you much longer as all you have to do is get the basic 98 on there, then run your XP CD.

if it is supposed to be a full version disk, bring it back to where you got it. either you got hosed or microsoft is getting sloppy with their packing process. if you do have an older version laying around, all you have to do is insert the old disk when prompted, it will spin the disk up, and look at it for about 5 seconds. voila! no need to install the old version first.

Question

To me it sounds like you have a pirated copy of windows xp and that copy was not made bootable. More than likely the disc was downloaded off the internet, some P2P site. Take it back and get your money.
