System will not allow any USB or IEEE 1394 devices
Hi, you have a great forum here!... I've had an ongoing emergency for a
solid week of sleepless nights now and this is the first forum I've seen
where you actually give "on-target" solutions... cheers on such a great resource and a big thank you for your expertise!.. Well, here's my situation.
After a hard drive failure, I recovered the file data off of the hard drive,
recovered the file structure, re-installed Windows XP Pro, dug up all of the
(ancient at this point) notebook drivers off of Sager & Clevo sites, re-installed a weeks worth of software and... blam! Suddenly, the system
will not allow any USB or IEEE 1394 devices (I do Visual FX training so need
to use USB/Firewire drives, Firewire DV cameras, etc...). But like many here, it seems, XP recognizes new devices, yellow exclamation marks them, refuses to load the drivers (even if I have them - saying they all
have "invalid data", or just simply "problem loading device"). I've tried everything, nothing seems to work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

P.s....
PS. These are the constant errors device manager shows and the
constant error messages which repeat while not allowing any new drivers
to be installed (the "Invalid Data" error follows any attempt to point to a
known local driver location)
Thanks again.
Best regards,
Jon

It's not showing the model so I can't check the makers site, but did you install the chipset drivers before anything else. You can get it here from Intel, No:12 in the list. Install then Restart your comp

This explains what it does http://downloadmirror.intel.com/8178/ENG/readme.txt

Thanks for the quick reply...
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I tried installing the chipset drivers, but same thing... it just doesn't want to accept anything attached USB/IEE 1394 (says drivers all have Invalid Data or just problem loading device). I've uninstalled them, rebooted and let XP find them again, but just repeats this viscious cycle. Is there any other info I could give you that might help you to better diagnose the problem?
Best regards,
Jon
P.S. The notebook is a Sager 8886 (Clevo 888E)

Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The programme runs with no alerts and then closes.

P.S. Terribly sorry this was so long everyone...after I posted the first part
I thought the rest would surely fit into a second... my apologies for the
overly long post.

If your Pc recognises you putting in a USB device, then your Hardware is working.
If it doesn't, then it's an issue with with port.
I've noticed you've tried various things, why don't you just reinstall Windows?
This would then show if it's a HW or SW issue

Exactly Kevin, that's the maddening part. XP "sees" that there is a new device which is trying to be added, pulls up the standard "...search for drivers..." dialogue boxes but no matter what you search for, point to or load directly, it still sees it as a problem loading and in the case of directly pointing XP to the driver file sees it as "invalid data" no matter what the file... this is why I think it might be some sort of device conflict.
As for re-loading XP... arghh... yes, last resort... it's just that I'm in the middle of a huge project, had a drive fail and crash and I just got done loading a fresh copy of XP, digging up all of the drivers, re-loading 100GB of software and data, so the thought of doing it all a third time (besides completely losing a major client) isn't my first choice if you know what I mean.
Best regards,
Jon

Try a repair Install of XP, bakup date, but this method should not wipe off any data http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
