Could somebody help with the Multimedia Audio Controller Drivers. There is a yellow question mark infront of it in the Device Manager! When I ran dxdiag, it says that it couldn't detect any sound card... Do you think I already did something to the sound card and it's not working properly or I should download some drivers! These are the characteristics of my computer if anybody understands what this means ( I don't):

Hi Bookworm,
Once again, Im back with another problem (similar to the one before re: Audio). Aaaaargh!
Basically, the drivers I installed that you mentioned worked great, however, I defragged my drive and then rebooted (2 days ago) and the sound had gone AGAIN. I uninstalled the drivers, rebooted and reinstalled the drivers but still no sound.
It's odd because when I installed the drivers, windows boots up with the usual windows sound (very loud) but when I go into 'sound, volume' panel etc there is nothing there at all. Its says
"there are no active mixer devices available"
This is really annoying now as I have installed and uninstalled them about 7 times and Im still getting the same thing.
I get the 'SOUNDMAN' icon in the bottom right of my PC and yet when I click on it, it doesnt bring up the equalizer configuration box like before - just nothing!!!
Please help (if you can) as I really cant fathom out what I'm doing wrong here with the installation. Im doing same as last time but its having none of it :-\
Many thanks (again) in advance for any info availabe.
Skinno :-(

P.S There is NO sound icon in the bottom right when I install the drivers....as in the little grey speaker icon that was there before

Not giving the info I need Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

Not giving the motherboard Get Everest, copy and paste the Computer / Summary section

Open Everest - expand Computer - select Summary - select Report - Quick Report - HTML . The report opens, using mouse hold the left button and starting at all above Debug-PCI - highlight all the text - when highlighted right click mouse - select Copy.

HI again Bookworm,
Thanks for the advice and links. I did as requested. I checked the 'component services' and they were fine, I then downloaded both files as requested --->

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...D=1&CatID=1070
instructions on how to install are shown

audio is Realtek AC'97 go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

the files I downloaded were "VIA_HyperionPro_V516A" from the first link
and
"WDM_A404" from the second link.
I installed the forementioned first then reboored, then did the same with the latter - then rebooted....
initially when the PC booted up, as per, the Windows greeting sound came on very loud and momentarily the small grey 'sound/volume' icon appeared in the bottom right of my screen. I was overjoyed, thinking all was resolved. Sadly not, the icon disappeared as quickly as it came. I tried playing music - still the same. I tried going into sound/volume set up - still the same :-(
The sound is obviously on (somewhere) as it boots up very loudly when windows starts, then nothing.
It may be something very simple I guess but it's proving incredibly difficult for me to suss out.
I have now literally been trying to resolve this issue since 10am this morning, it's now 01.42am (how sad am I? lol) and I still haven't fixed it.
Due to intense frustration and exhaustion I now need to sleep. Should you have ANY other ideas as to what may be the problem or anything simple I may have overlooked, your suggestions will be very much appreciated.
I'm now thinking a sledgehammer may help LOL.

Bookworm,
Thanks for reading my last piece. I uninstalled and reinstalled again the last two named drivers. Just for a re-cap, each time I boot up, the windows sound comes on very loud, twice now momentarily the grey sound icon has popped up then disappeared instantly. When I click on the sound/volume panel in start/all programs/accesories/entertainment, the following message is displayed --->>
"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click printers and other hardware then Add Hardware"
Needless to say, this doesnt work.
