Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

you usually need an XP disc, to do this, have you got the HP support discs

Get Everest / copy and paste the Computer – Summary section. Leave out the Debug –PCI section. Lets see what is in your comp

Same Problem Over Here.. with just a little difference in it

Hi there,

i got the same similar problem.
I also have the code 28 problem and the Multimedia audio controller with yellow question mark.
And here are things i've already tried.
i've downloaded realtek, and uninstalled the Multimedia audio controller. first, then installed realtek, then restarted my computer. When my computer was started it had found the new Hardware and when he was getting at the point of installing it, it suddenly restarted my whole pc at its own. Then came back and found the hardware, and restarted again, and again and again. So i couldnt do nothing much. So i refreshed my Windows XP my reinstalling all over again.
So i can't download Realtek, computer won't except it(dunno why). So tried to go to winfast.com. 'Cause when I start my computer first thing i get to see is a winfast logo, so tried their drivers. So i installed the 4xsound driver they had. So i've downloaded it, installed it. Then when it started, it says:
Waiting for hardware to prepare.
Then at the same time i get to wizzard of microsoft of installing a new hardware.
so i go threw the wizzard and at the end he says couldnt find the driver can't install. While the other program is still running and waiting for the wizzard.

So i've tried a lots of things, but just can't get my speakers to work, what supposed to be a easy thing!!

Here are my computer information:

hi!
i also have this multimedia audio controller ac97 problem that almost so many here have experienced reformatting winxp. i am a new guy here and i just read on and on first, about your posts regarding this problem following well almost all of the advice links and downloads you have given the others. good for many of them, the help worked out. not in my case though! the only development i can see here is now the drivers are detected but device manager still indicates an exclamation point sign in yellow and cannot detect manufacturer but at logon i'm always being prompted to install multimedia audio controller this time specific with drivers for realtek for via ac97.

sounds and audio properties>hardware tab>multimedia audio controller properties--cannot detect manufacturer

You said "But that driver does not work." Is it giving a yellow ! in Device Manager? If you double click on it, it should give an error code, for eg. Error code 28 for Drivers not installed
