Wow, I can't believe what a common error this really is.

Here's my problem. In my Device Manager I have 4 "! and ?" items in my "Other Devices" column. They are Universal Serial Bus Controller (x2), a Video Controller, and another Video Controller (VGA Compatible). I USED to have a "! and ?" next to "Multimedia Audio Controller" but then I installed the Realtek AC'97 Driver and it went away. However, there is an "!" next to the Realtek driver and says it cannot be started. (Also, in sound options, it of course says "No Audio Device". Same 'ol same 'ol)

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

I'm having the same issue with my Multimedia Audio Controller. I'm told the drivers aren't installed under the properties in Device Manager and every time I try to update the drivers, it fails part way through and tells me :

"There was an error installing this device: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.
An error occurred during the installation of this device. The data is invalid."
