new printer is driving me to Drink !!

Hi to every one, ........( hope this is thr right place to post my problem )
well Ive gone and purchased my first new computer, and this week decided to go buy a printer ( canon iP 4200 )
it came with an installation CD ( in Thai ) and I ran through the set up as per the instruction book ( in English )
and half way through the installation the programme stuck !!, So I decided to down the latest drivers from a Canon web site,
which downloaded OK, the printer is shown on the Windows XP conrtol panel ( printers & faxes ) as the default printer and the
connection to the printer is via an USB lead. The printers & faxes section shows that the printer is connected via a USB
Local port ( no number) and on the Driver tab shows a driver installed Ok

Now when I go to print the printer systems box comes onto screen, and I click the required number of copy's
and click ..print.. just for a flash a small printer logo is shown on the bottom tool bar , then nothing ...no printing..?

I then went to my computer .> properties > Hardware > Device Manager .. this showed that the printer is on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers > next to a USB logo .. but there's also a yellow ( ! ) next to my printer's name iP4200 .

I then clicked properties on this USB logo ( with the yellow ! ) and a box came onto screen as this ..

iP4200 Prorerties
Device .... Universal serial Bus Controllers
Manufacture .... Unknown
Location ... 0 ( iP4200 )
comments box..
This device is not configuared correctly ( Code 1 )
to reinstall the drivers for this device ..Click Reinstall Driver ..which I did.

Then Hardware update Wizard came on to the screen...and asked Can Windows connect to Windows update to search for softwaer, so I clicked yes this time only .

and clicked Next ....it asked if I had the hardware CD that came with the Printer ..knowing that there may be a problem with this CD I did not insert the CD.

Then I clicked ...Next a second box then came up called Hardware Update wizard.... Please Wait while the Wizard searches. After a few minuets a new box came on screen saying at the top ... Files needed and this...................

The file usbprint.sys on Windows XP professional Service Pack 2 CD is required and there was a browse box to copy the file from........
,
but heres my problem I can't fine the file in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and this new computer came pre loaded with Windows XP professional Service Pack 2 , and there was no service Pack 2 CD with the machine, but the computer came with ( 5 ) Recovery CD's with nothing on the label to say whats on them only numbered 1 to 5

Ive tried to down load Windows XP professional Service Pack 2 but the Microsoft download web site scanned my computer and said I do not need to download
Windows XP professional Service Pack 2 as its already on my computer..?

any one got any ideas what to do next please.. and yes you can tell I am a computer Newbie !!

Thanks ............ Mypenry ( central Thailand )

Hi There,

As per what "snooker" said, the driver directory is C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers ....download the another set of driver from this site, and reinstall it, I suspect that you have downloaded the driver for Windows 98 and Me instead of Windows XP, in any case, if after installing the new driver you still can't find the USBPRINT.SYS in your system please let me know and I'll provide you a copy of that file.

Thanks to you all for your comments and advice
well I spent a day trying different things but no luck, then by chance I saw some one sitting in out local
wat ( temple ) looking at a lap top, he spoke English and I ran through my problems with him, and by chance ( I could not beleive ) he had a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD ,

So I borrowed it and reinsatlled it, then installed the printer Driver Etc and now every thing works just fine ( fingers crossed ) I did a test print several times and all OK

So again many thanks to you Guy's for your time and help

The ANswer is the Printer Port

the default printer port is ltp1, it is also the recommened port. But if you are connecting via a usb lead!!! I had exactly the same issue and found that as i was not able to ask a man for his SP2 CD it didnt help!
