I only have sound through headphones!!!

i have recompiled a new belarc.com document. Reason being is because i reinstalled windows xp pro wit service pack 2 (2002 version)...i still dont have sound unless i plug in headphones...again im on a Comapq Evo N610C Laptop, i have installed the most current sound driver from compaq (soundMAX)...please help

Check this
Check Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Audio Tab / Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio device is selected; something like modem line 0 playback might have been substituted for the proper audio device. Information by Jim Pivonka.

i checked what you told m to check and the only option that i have is "soundMAX Digital Audio"....is that supposed to be there? What else can i try...
