Internet Sound problem

The sound on windows media player works fine, as well as any other program that produces sound, Other than the internet. Any sound on the internet does not work. I checked to make sure that the box in internet options reading "Play sounds" Or something to that effect, was checked. I updated my flash to 9, Ive done everything I can think of. Does anyone know whats wrong?

When did all the problems start? Have any of you actually tried to do a System Restore, to a date before the problem started?

I'm having the same problem. I've had trouble with Trojans, but I thought I had gotten rid of them all (maybe not). When I tried to do system restore it said I couldn't because there had been no changes or something. I even tried restoring to like a month ago. I've reinstalled sound drivers, reinstalled firefox (sound doesn't work on IE either). I called my internet provider tech support and they hadn't even heard of the problem. They suggested system restore which didn't work. I'll try updating media player, but I don't see how that'll help.

Possible solution

Hey guys
I installed a new sound card today, and was having the same problem (could hear sounds everywhere except on the internet).
No solutions on t'internet worked, so I decided to mess around with a few settings blindly and crazily.
I found that in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio
Under the "MIDI music playback" dropdown box, there were two options. I changed to the other, and voila, I could hear Bill Bailey's sweet voice on Youtube once more.

I hope that if you try this it works out for you,

Best of luck

Rooty

Talking Thanks Rooty

I've been having the same problem for ages now. I tried to find the solution for a long time, couldn't crack the problem, and would just occasionally do a Web search looking for some new information. Your post was cracker jack, and I can hear internet audio once again.

Thanks for the help out

Been in a bit of state all day because the sound went on my internet
Media player was fine
Tried a whole load of things, including downloading some codec thing (clearly this is my area of expertise)
Tried Rooty's suggestion
Et voila!
Google has triumphed again
Thanks everyone
