Angry USB Mouse Locks Up

I am running XP Home on an HP 8570C. I recently installed a USB 2 board. I bought a Microsoft USB Basic Optical Mouse. The mouse will "freeze" 3 or 4 times an hour for about 3 minutes. Seems to do it more often when I am surfing, both IE and Firefox have the same problem. Freezes some with email using Outlook Express.

Mouse will freeze if plugged into a USB 1 or 2 port, or with supplied adapter into PS 2 port. I have tried switching to a Belkin Ball mouse and it does the same thing on both USB and PS 2 ports.

When freeze occurs, the scroll wheel still works and icon will change from pointer to hand if it scrolls over a clickable area. Right click will bring up menu, left click will bring up page if the hand is showing. The icon location on the screen will not move during this time.

While it is frozen, the HD activity LED will flash occasionally, and near the end of the freeze time the icon will change from pointer to hourglass along with HD activity a few times just before I get control of the mouse back.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum with you first post.

When you say you bought a USB 2 Board, do you mean an add on USB card ? did it come with a driver (Even though XP does not need a driver for USB 2.0 card). Over all I looks to be more driver related then hardware itself.

cheers

similar problem

Well, I have a very similar problem. But this not with a new USB card but a new USB laser mouse. It is a viewmate laser mouse. It came with its own drivers which I installed. Everything works fine but once it a while it hangs.

When it hangs the mouse doesn't move but all other button including the scroll wheel all work. If I simply unplug the usb mouse and then plug it back in, it works again. Any help in fixing this annoyance would be appreciated.

Also, another weird but perhaps related info is that this occurance is highly correlated with my cell phone ringing. Yes, you heard me correct. Whenever my phone (sony ericsson) rings the mouse hangs. Although I have observed this I cannot say that this is the only cause or even if it is the cause at all. The mouse itself is a wired mouse so I'm not sure what about a cell phone might affect the mouse itself??

Thanks in advance for any help.
