work laptop problems

Folks

I recently was granted a work laptop that I was allowed to take home. As I'm not allowed to access MSN Hotmail when on site
I thought "great, I can use the broadband at home and this laptop to get my email" (the B’band came with the rented apartment & I have no home PC)

I connected and everything was ok. However, after a period of time I returned to the laptop to discover that it had locked itself. I tried entering my p'word but could not re-log on. I restarted the laptop and when prompted to log in I saw that the log on domains had vanished. Without the correct domain set, my username is worthless. Therefore I am unable to get any further.

Can anyone explain what has happened? Is this common? Or should I prepare for a telling off from IT? I'm convinced that somehow the fact that I was accessing personal email on a work laptop has been logged, even with off site internet access - hence the removal of log on domains!

Any help greatly appreciated.
