dell inspiron 1000 shuts down during xp home install

Hey everyone,

I hope someone out there can help me with this problem. Im trying to install xp home on a friends dell (old hd crashed and burned) but everytime i try, it shuts down. Its always about the same spot, just before i start the format or after it begins. I tryed loading a copy of win 2000 and it loads fine and was able to load a copy of xp pro on it just fine. The computer camepreloaded withxp home.Ive tried a couple of copys of xp home thinking the cd was bad but got the same results. Has anyone had this happen to them or have any ideas what may be causing this.

Hmm, does it shut off immedately? Seems like a hardware issue or something.

it shuts down part way through the installation,
I've tried a variety of trouble shooting related to removing heat with no luck..

as I have looked around the web and seen similar issues then I'm led to think of either Windows XP Home OEM being the culprite, or a bad CD Rom drive...

if anyone has any experience which could help point me in the correct direction to solve this one would be appreciated

the Computer is a Dell Inspiron 1000, which I do not know the history of, though I'm told it worked right before I got it with a pre-installed OS
