Problem with Sound -- No Sound recorder

Hi

My bro installed XP and lost the cds.. I do not have sound recorder device in Accesories.
Also, in Control Panel -> Sounds and devices -> Device Vol. the advanced button is disabled. So i am unable to check Place Volume icon in the task bar and i am unable to use microphone coz of that..

I checked the device manager for any issues in Sound,Video and game controllers ... audio\video codecs and legacy aud\vid drivers are working fine.

Now, can i now have sound recorder prog enabled without using my old xp cd ? i need to use voice chat in Yahoo Messenger,for which i need to configure micro phone which i am unable to do... do i need to have XP cd ? will that solve the problem ?

Is there any other way to solve the problem other than using the xp cd ? can i download any drivers or softwares to install sound recorder ?
Note : i am able to listen to music....

Pls kindly suggest some solutions...
