Audio Device not working on XP - tried everything already!

Please Help!

I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX570. I have recently updated to service pack 2 and my sound stop working it. It is SoundMax Audio Device. There are no yellow exclamation marks under 'control panel/system/hardware/device manager'. However, No Audio Device was found under 'Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices'. The sound device is onboard.

I tried downloading the driver and reinstalling from Sony website, but that does not help. I tried uninstalling and then upgrading the original driver.

I double checked that the Audio Controller is enabled in the BIOS. I tried restoring the default values in BIOS. I tried upgrading the BIOS.

I tried restoring the Windows back to before the XP service pack 2 installation.

Control panel does not show any conflicting device.

I tried buying a cheap PCI sound card. The driver came on the CD. Although the plug-and-play found the PCI sound card, and it shows up under device manager inside the control panel, 'No Audio Device' is found under 'Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices'.

After spending too much toying with this, I am out of ideas. Is there something wrong with Windows? How come it cannot detect the onboard or the PCI sound card? What can I do?

Thanks in Advance!

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

the only thing I can suggest is to update the chipset driver ( Sp2 is a new working system) Sony don't offer it ,but you have the intel 845 go here to Intel http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21

it's No:4 the INF Update Utility, install then RESTART your comp, if still no sound install audio again.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick reply Barbara.

I tried reinstalling the chipset driver and the Audio Driver as you mentioned, but I still get 'No Audio Device' under volume tab for Control Panel/Sound and Audio Devices. Under the Audio and Voice tab, the only device I can choose is the Modem #0, the sound device is not available.

Under Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, the device status reports it is working properly. I am not sure what to make of the I/O range and IRQ, which are E000-E13F and 17 respectively. There are no conflicting devices.

Choosing Audio Devices under the property tab, the status reported is "Driver is Enabled but has not been started".

I am out of idea at this point What confound me is that even a third party PCI sound card is not working. Is it possible that something in the motherboard or OS that is not starting the audio device? How can I further diagnose?

Just an update.

Finally gave up and reinstall windows XP on separate hard drive. This appears to work. I think something got screwed up in the OS so it was not detecting audio. I spent too much time trying to diagnose it.

Thanks for your suggestion.
