unfortunately, i am a fellow dial up user. good news and bad news. there are plenty of the internet booster type programs out there to try. bad news, none of them work. you are really limited as to the tweaks that you can make. there are alot of them out there, but none of them really do a whole lot. there are just too many variables that cannot be helped by changing settings on your machine. basically, there are 3 things you can do that will reliably speed up your connection.
1. check your inside wiring from your phone jack to the phone company's junction box outside. it is not expensive, nor does it take alot of experience to pull new line from your computer room to the little grey box. everything is color coded, and it helps not to have any splices between your jack in the computer room to the junction box. i like to have a dedicated wire for my computer.
2. go to your modem's properties and set the transmit and reciever buffer settings to the highest setting. XP is pretty good about setting this, so it may not apply.
3. this one won't get you a faster connection, but it will make your modem dial faster. go back to your modem settings and on the advanced tab there should be a box where you can type. type in "s11=50". (without quotes, of course.) you should notice that when you are connecting, the dialer goes much faster.
there is another setting that is kinda like #2, XP is alot better about keeping it in line, so it don't need to be changed. it has to do with IP packet size. 95, 98, and Me used to set is to a defult of 1500, which is much too large for dial up. the larger the packet, the longer it takes to redownload if there is an error. but, this don't apply to XP.
