Software issues or Hardware for DvD?

Hello Friends,

I have just recently purchased a computer from Cyborpower. I have a dvd-rw from Lite-On and here is my problem.

The dvd drive will read a software disk and audio, but will not play a dvd? I sent the unit back, they replaced it, and I am still having the same problem. I am running XP Pro, AMD 4600 duel core, SLI duel gt7900 video cards.

The dvd software I am trying to use are, InterVideo, Windows media, power dvd, nero. So you would think with one of these programs that it would read something. Now, when I attempt to put a dvd in the system, you can go to windows explorer and see its showing up, but no software will run it. Yes I tried everything I could think of.

Any help would be appreciated.

You said it does not play DVD, but does Windows recognize it as a DVD (ie put in the disc and go to my computer and look at the drive.)

The first thing I always do when I get a new optical drive it install the latest firmware into it. It is available from the developers website. I suggest reading their HOW TO if you have never done this before.

That's odd. There's no doubt you have an MPEG2 codec, probably several. The Power DVD codec, for instance, is a good one. Agree about flashing with latest firmware, try that first. Have a look in the Lite-On subforum at CDFreaks for your firmware:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44

Did any software come pre-installed on your comp? (Or did you or someone else install some ultra-super-mega codec pack? That would be a bad idea.) There's a possibility there's a codec conflict or a DirectShow issue. Put a DVD movie in the drive and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder, open it and load one of the .VOB files into the latest GSpot. It's free, get it here:

Look at the top right, does it say the proper codec is installed? Then try to "render" the file, any errors? If so run CodecSniper and see if you have any "broken" codecs. Free, get it here:

You could also try one more DVD software player. Media Player Classic and Videolan will often play files no other software will, and are capable of playing MPEG2, for instance, without having any MPEG2 codec installed on your machine, and are less susceptible to conflicts. Both free, here:

Good luck and post back on how you're getting on.
