XP Profile backup to server takes too long: can I disable it?

I have an ASUS m6b00n laptop running WinXP version 5.1.26. Recently our IT staff upgraded our domain controller. They created a new profile for me on my laptop but now my machine takes a LONG time (5+ minutes) to boot up and even LONGER (15+ minutes) to shut down when I'm connected to the network. If I'm not connected, i.e. using my roaming profile, things go much faster.

The IT guy said that my profile is stored to the server every time I shut down, and that my profile includes everything in \My Documents. That's a lot of data.

Is it possible to disable the automated profile backup? If so, how? I'd prefer to revert back to the backup software that I used before, since it allowed for incremental backups whereas the current setup doesn't.

That's the price to pay for roaming profile ....I guess you know the reason for slow bootup and shutdown so there is no reason for me to explain.

There are other options available....for example, instead of saving the files in My Document folder, I would suggest to save it on your "Home" directory on the server and then have the directory mapped to your laptop, that ways you can look at them or modify them on the server, yet allowing it to be backed up all the time.

If you want you could create a local profile on the laptop and save / backup the data manually buy I think best practice with roaming profile is to keep as much as you can on the server rather then having it on the saved profile on the server.

Cheers

Snowmonkey, thanks for your quick reply. Due to the locations where I work, it's difficult to work very much in my "Home" directory.

And it sounds like that's what you addressed with the possibility of creating a local profile on the laptop. (This all might be over my head.) Is there a simple way for me to prevent the roaming profile and/or the local profile (on the server) from updating itself on the server? Is there some switch that I can select or de-select to prevent this from happening?

Again, thanks for your help. People like you and others who volunteer their time and knowledge make the web a better place.

Problem solved

On a WinXP machine, select Control Panel. Then select Performance and Maintenance, then System. On the System Properties tab, select Advanced. In the User Profiles section, highlight the user for whom you wish to change the profile. Click on Change Type. Select Local Profile and click Okay.

Restart the machine.

This prevents your profile from backing up to the server. I recommend that you perform regular backups if you decide to disable your roaming profile.
