Angry Selection And Capitalization Problem. Weird, Huh?

TWO PROBLEMS THAT APPEAR TOGETHER AND I DON'T KNOW WHY.

For no reason at all, I will suddenly be typing in all caps. Cap lock is not on. In fact, I have to turn the cap lock on to type in lower case. Whether on or not, I can't use numbers because all I get is the symbols above the numbers.

Simultaneous with this problem is my "select" problem. I will move my cursor to an area of text, and I the entire area from where the cursor was to where the cursor is gets highlighted. In a folder, if I try to select a file, all the files from the first one are all selected. It is annoying, and pretty much makes my 'puter useless.

I've tried hitting the alt, tab, ctrl and fn key with every combination of letter and number I can think of to make the problem stop, but to no avail. I'm getting pissed.

I have a Compaq Presario v5000 running Windows XP Home.
It has an AMD Sempron 2Ghz processor with 640 MB RAM.

Any suggestions are deeply appreciated. Thanks.

-Ken

All those symptoms point to one of the two 'shift' keys being faulty or stuck in the down position. There's a shift key at each end of the bottom row of letter keys. Testing with a different keyboard would confirm that to be the case.
