Unhappy mms streams do not work HELP PLEASE

Hi everyone,

Something very strange happend.
I always was able to play mms:// streams...

just now i was at a site and clicked on a mms:// stream...
my laptop stopped working and i had to reboot my machine.

when i did that i went back to the site and the stream did now work.
I went to some other sites and came to know that http:// streams
work but mms:// streams do not.

when i right click the media file and go to error info. :

Quote:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").

I went to windows media player --> tools --> options --> network
and the all checkboxes are checked and protocol MMS is there.
( windows media player 10 )

so from the moment my system hanged and had to be rebooted
I can not play mms:// streams anymore...

please help...

This is the first i heard of mms. What is that ?

I think the website made mediaplayer to stop working and when
i had to reboot the laptop something went wrong...

MMS = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Media_Services

like a mms stream mms://<blabla> .wmv

I just googled a site for mms streams and here is a example:
http://mypage.bluewin.ch/a-z/cusipage/liveradio1.html

when i click on mms://media.apex2000.net/KHKX
normally windows media player would pop up and play the file.
( actually stream the file )

Now it gives this msg:

--> media player pops up

--> msg box:
Quote:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").

when i click on More information:

I get:

Quote:
C00D11BB: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is either not supported by the Player or not supported by the server.

If you encountered this error by clicking a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.

If you encountered this error by typing a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Open URL dialog box, try opening the file by using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").

A list of protocols that are supported by the Player and the correct syntax follows:

mms://server/filename (for example, a file with a .wma, .wmv, .asf, or .mp3 extension)
http://server/filename
rtsp://server/filename
mms://server/sami.asf?SAMI=http://server/sami/sami_demo.smi (SAMI file)
If Windows Media Player supports the protocol and you still cannot play the content, verify that the Player is configured to use all of its supported protocols.

To configure protocol settings
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
In the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes.
Note

The supported protocols can be used only to stream digital media files. Windows Media Player cannot be used as a browser.

MMS is supported by the Player and did always work...
and i checked the boxes and that all look fine!

What error messages are you getting ?
It has to be a browser problem.By the way is it IExplorer ?
I have WMP 9,i hear 10 has problems.

The error:

Quote:

IExporer and Firefox

The strange thing is that it always has worked with WMP 10.

From the moment the system crashed and I restarted it...
I can not access that stream protocol.

(the system crashed with no extra reason opening that protocol (mms stream, hence; i think it somehow does not allow me / does not
support it anymore!?!)

But use IEx if you want my help we must use the same.
This is probably a browser setting of too much protection.
Use Medium for the Security/Local Internet.
The expresion crashed has no meaning to me as does Froze.
This just gets you closer to a new install, not a fix.

A crash or Froze:

You are working on a computer... you click on something and suddenly
nothing works... your mouse, keyboard nothing has any effect...
even when you press CTRL + ALT + DEL the screen does not show
any change... hence; the computer froze and the only thing you can
do is hold the on/off button so you do a hard reboot because, thats
the only thing that you can do.

When the problem started i was using firefox...
where does wmp writes down witch files (streams) it can and cannot
play?!?

Are you sure ?
Don't you have a soft reset button ? It should be part of the main startup button area.
This is a harmless sollution.

Hey buddy,

every mms:// steam gives me that problem.
is there a option in windows to see (in the registry or something)
what windows media player has to do when it has to open a
mms:// stream?

The computer is running fine... just when i click on a hyperlink that
opens a stream ( starting with mms:// in stead of http:// ) it
will give the error. (see screenshot above)

KPLX Texas.You didn't answer that ?
Re your snapshot ? What did you click to get that message ?
Did you click more info ?
It didn't contain mms.Where do you see this mms thingy.
I can't test this site without this info.
You can't tell me that none of all those stations don't play.

Go to the first link I gave you.
Go with your mouse over a hyper link ( a radio station )

you now see in your lower left side of your browser the target link
if you would click on that hyper link

if you see there a link starting with mms://<fle path>
the stream does not work anymore on my computer
if you see there a link starting with http://<file path>
the stream does work.

----

another way to see it:

go to the site i gave you... some links have (mms) behind it.
now you know its a mms stream. its a streaming media file
that will open windows media player to stream the file.
its like a mp3 but you download the file from the server but it will
stream from the server and buffer in windows media player.

-- since a few days my computer does not want to open those files
the moment I click on the file i get a msg. (see screenshot of mine
in this thread) if i click there on more information i get:
Quote:

It is not about realplayer!

Realplayer etc works...

Again:

1. When I go to the site
2. There are many links there
3. some links connect to realplayer, wmp, quicktime etc...
4. when you click on a link that has (mms) behind it in white
it works for you but not for me.
5. If you move your mouse over the links you can right link the
hyperlink.
6. look in the properties
7. where it shows that the stream is a mms stream.
(you see that when the link starts with: mms:// )
that link will not work for me.

please, tell me what part is not clear...

It is about Realplayer since i installed it they play in RPLayer.
I have enough checking the other link with station names.
Why won't you name them.
I will not search all those stations.

I dont use a popup stopper

It is NOT about realplayer! Its Windows Media Player
that played the streams before.

I can name them but what is the use?
again: every mms:// stream wil not work.

I tested them on that site and other sites!

This is the Fix, from Hadoyle Windows forum
"This fixed it:

1. Open a command prompt
2. Type regsvr32 wmnetmgr.dll
3. Hit Enter then click OK.

Now streaming proxy settings shows:

HTTP------>Browser

RTSP------>None

Best of all....I have my Sirius back."
