windows xp audio problem

hi there,

i have a problem with my audio, i am running windows xp home edition, now then after trying to install a (m audio fast track usb guitar and mic recording interface) i seem to have no audio at all this is day 3 of my waisted life, the problem is whenever i go to sounds and audio devices to choose my m audio fast track, the main the main sounds and audio device properties box, says no audio device (and no buttons are enabled for me to choose anything), if i go to the hardware tab to choose my m audio it says the device is working properly, if i right click on properties it says the diver is enabled but not been started.

the selection already in the sound playback etc is modem #0 line playback/record, ive tried my m audio on a friends pc and it works fine, ive tried uninstalling/re installing, system restore and the settings are still there, ive tried services.msc and looked for windows audio and all is well, ive even tried phoning the makers of of m audio to ask there opinion but were as helpful as a piece of used toilet paper, could some one please help me as i am loosing the will to live.

thankyou
gavin

Hello Neonworld,

If the audio device in device manager has not started then you will have no audio at all. What you need to do is tell us the reason why the driver is not starting, there can be more than one reason.

Also, look under the resources tab for the properties of that driver. Possibly update the audio driver too. Is this audio driver compatible with your operating system?

Hello again,

It sounds like the mixer device needs to be installed to be honest. What sound card and driver do you have installed for just your normal computer speakers?

in the device manager under sound and video how many drivers are showing exactly and what are their names?

Do you have the audio codecs driver and the legacy audio driver showing as installed?

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for your message, I'll try and help you as much as I can but need a bit more info.

Go to the MY COMPUTER icon,
Right Click it and select PROPERTIES in the menu,
Select the HARDWARE tab and click DEVICE MANAGER,
Look for sounds,

Is there a yellow question mark displayed there?? (or anywhere else in the list)

Regards,

DaveC2003

Can anybody help me with this anoying problem?
I just lost the volume icon from the taskbar and i cannot get it back. That's not the problem but i lost some sound as well. For example i hear nothing from flash games or clips. Also, i cannot ripp music, that's trouble. I didn't do anything with the drivers and they look fine in device manager.
All i did before the problem is scanning for spyware with Spybot - Search & Destroy. That could be it but how to fix it?

Try enabling the soundcard that you disabled, maybe that is connected to the mixer device? It is an easy step, so if i am wrong here, easily disable it again.

My mixer is the realtec AC'97 adapter and it shows up as soundman as a taskbar icon, but maybe that is because that is the driver i have installed.

Have you tried just reinstalling the current driver you have installed, maybe the mixer was corrupted and needs a reinstall?

Windows xp is faulting in this way all over the place. I believe so far, that an update from windows is affecting the OS in some way. The only way I found to get the Sounds and Audio devices to list the correctly identified and working sound card is to unplug all perifs (leaving only monitor, mouse and keyboard plugged in and repair the OS, by installing the original OS disc and hit F8 at startup, let it load and go through the prompts for repair. This same thing happened to my desktop as well and this is how I was able to temporarily fix it-to get the sound back.

Same issues

Whats happenning with mine (and others as I see) is something is telling the Windows Audio services to stop. Restarting the service works for a minute or two but then it stops again. What I did to correct the issue is go to the services list, right click on the Windows Audio Service, Properties, Recovery, then change the setting to "restart the service" on First Failure, Second Failure, and subsequent failures.

Hope this works for you. I fought with it for a while..

Hello I'm having the same problem having no audio. I really don't know a whole lot about computers (reading over all the posts previous to mine proves it to me because I don't know what half the stuff is being discussed) Because of one post though, I did go check my Device Manager and there is a yellow question mark AND yellow exclamation mark on the Multimedia Audio Controller. I tried disable and enabling again but no luck. I also tried to follow the Fat and Slow suggestion but absolutly cannot find a "services list" or a "Windows Audio Service"
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
