Media Player Gone crazy!!!!

First thanks in advance for any help. I have win xp and media player 10 installed on my computer. when i would watch streaming clips online i was always using media player 10 as the player. For some strange reason the player has downgraded itself to using version 6. Now i cant watch my clips the same way and it doesnt even let me play some clips anymore. I am confused as to why it has done this because media player 10 is still installed and functioning properly. Is there a way to get the player to work right again? thanks for any help
