Good advice...

Simple, yet effective solution. Downloaded the exe and ran once to remove sptd and... problem solved, a drive letter was assigned to USB flash drive.
Ran exe a second time to add sptd driver (I reckon it should be there for
a reason) and drives are still assigned. Problem originally arose when I upgraded my five-year old mobo and repaired Windows XP.
Note: I was just about to give up and return the box or re-install Windows from scratch!

Question Have same issues as most people above or below

howdy, I'm having the same issues as most if not all of the other users of whom have posted on forum the only problem is, the sdpt (or what have you) is NOT listed in the registry, Alcohol 120 has Never been installed, have upgraded to sp3 recently but believe issue has been there 'forever' but as the pc/laptop has not been used in over 6-48months probably never noticed, also never really used external devices on it. I have been required to 'backup' most of the data off the laptop to do a full scale recovery (format and destroy then 'recover' or if you wish full scale start from scratch) as the sound and various other issues are becoming an issue even PRIOR to sp3 install.

But as this is to do with drives etc. not being assigned letters or are assigned but not visable to the OS (Operating System e.g Win xp etc.) i will continue, I have looked at most of the solutions listed and found that none would actually solve this issue (the ext drive not being seen in win), and so i've decided to ask for a little more help.

Have looked through the services list, looked through the registry, looked just about everywhere for the service that is supposed to be wrecking havoc on so many of the posters computers and yet the laptop does not have the file or service listed anywhere, hence find it not to be that issue, for now i'm backing up the data all via the DOS prompt, as one poster did say that they could access the drive via the prompt but not win, I didn't think of trying it, hence tried and true method. But nevertheless, bit annonying having to continually use copy, xcopy, del, etc commands to modify the files/folders on the ext drive.

Cheers.
Simon.

Hi Samcko,
I was so glad to read your message, because I got realy the idea I was the only one....:-))
But the facts are...I'm still looking(since nov. 2007!!) for a solution.

I hope we can support each other and stay informed wathever we find out as a possible solution.

I think may problem is caused by the software of SmartDraw. I have a registered copy of this (wonderfull) program. But what happened?
In november 2007 I bought a new computer and wanted to set over all the (legal) stuff of my old computer. So I copied the (earlier)downloaded file from Smartdraw on my old computer to an USB stick and then tried to paste it on my new computer. But from that moment my new computer did'nt show up in the explorer with the USB stick.
Afterwards I think it's because the license of the program. That it's for only one computer Possibly the SmartDraw designers made a trick like this to prevent illigal copys of there software.

So I want to contact the Smartdraw company and answer this question. I hope it will give any direction to a solution. If it's so I will let Yopu know immidiately.

I hope You want to accept my invitation.

USB Drives not showing in Windows XP

THIS WORKED. Thank you, I spent hours looking for answers. Everywhere just said "assign a letter manually and thats it." NOPE.

I had Alcohol 50% installed, and I had already uninstalled it. I never did check the registry, because I downloaded the "spdtinst" file listed in the answer above, ran it from the run prompt followed by "remove," and ran it.

Just follow the prompts whatever it says - mine said something about stopping the service first, then rebooting. I said ok, and once rebooted, I ran it again, and it told me the driver was not installed. As soon as I did that, my USB drive poped up.

WISH I FOUND THIS HOURS AGO - but it still works, even in 2009.

P.S. Although I used Alcohol 50%, in the past I may have installed Daemon tools and forgot about it.

Samcko - just try downloading the SPDT program, and running it as described above by adding "remove" after it.

It may just work.
