Question WinXP Pro Shutdown Problems

i have been working on a compaq presario 6000 desktop machine new out of the box, running windows XP Pro.

from the day it was first started their has been a problem with shutdown on the machine. everytime shut down is selected the machine will go through the shutdown procedure (No errors appear at this time and machine does not hang) then the machine will automatically restart.

I have been advised by microsoft that one of three things may be causing this problem

1 - You have "automatically restart" selected.
2 - The Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 or Direct CD 5.0 program is installed on your computer. (and causes problems)
3 - Conflict between applications will cause error screen (blue Screen) to appear for an instant

I have tryed the first step no luck, I do not have Roxio Software installed, and i get no error messages what so ever.

Please can some body help me

Lightbulb Motherboard?

Maybe some sort of motherboard craziness? Maybe some sort of startup settings in the BIOS(You know, they have start-up on LAN, start-up on keyboard, etc). I know I'm not being much help, but check settings on the hardware first. I really can't imagine what it could be, but I've seen some strange things occur over simple incompatibility issues between hardware and software.

Wake on lan wouldnt cause it to reboot instantly. but the default for that is ON. If you arent on a network you dont need to worry about it.

-Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Start Up and Recovery and uncheck the reboot automatically box. If it is checked. - but you already did that.

-Its not # 2. You dont have it...

- If you do get the blue screen, unchecking automatic reboot will let you see what the blue screen is. Then do this.

-Insert the original XP disk in the CD drive and then reboot.

You will get a "Welcome to Setup" screen

You will have the choice of Setting up Windows XP by pressing "Enter"

Calling on Recovery Console by pressing "R"

That is your option so press "R"

Then select your EINDOWS location, usually # 1

Once at the Recovery Console "C:\" prompt type "CHKDSK" and press "ENTER" to check for disk errors.

OR this
-Y-SB3 Logitech Internet Keyboard can also cause this problem. If you use it as a simple generic keyboard, there’s no problem; but, if you install the Key Commander software that drives the special Internet functions, Win XP will restart instead of shut down. Unfortunately, Logitech has decided that they will not be updating this driver for this keyboard.

OR this
-Logitech MouseWare 8.6. Windows reboots when shutdown is attempted. The software caused a BSOD with KBDCLASS.SYS. Removing the software solved the BSOD the problem.

OR this
-Whether or not APM is enabled makes a difference — but the effect could go two ways. Some users report that XP reboots on shutdown if APM is enabled, but shuts Windows down just fine if APM is disabled. Other users report exactly the opposite behavior. The issue seems related to the computer’s specific hardware or BIOS — so, as with all NT operating systems, stick to the Hardware Compatibility List where possible. Meaning, update your bios.

ORRRRRR this
-Sound cards are notorious for causing shutdown problems. Because these devices load so many drivers and stick them in a myriad of locations, trouble shooting them can be a nightmare. Using the uninstall routines and then checking to see if the shutdown problem disappears is the easiest method. Many of the motherboards now come with onboard sound and these seem to be relatively trouble free, but legacy soundcards continue to be a nightmare.

Hope some of that helps.
