Virus on Old HD

Last year I opened an email attachment that I shouldn't of. Had a virus that attached all Microsoft programs. I have since built a new machine.
Old computer - DELL - 1.8 ghz - 80 meg HD
I have alot of data I would like to transfer.
New computer - 3.2 pentium IV - 200 meg HD
I have Norton, Zone Alarm, and SpySweeper running.
New op - XP professional
Old operating sytem - XP Home
My question is - I am thinking of putting the ols HD into the new computer as a slave. Can I do this without infecting the new system? What precautions should I take?
After I transfer the data I would wipe out all info on old HD. I don't want to infect new system.

Any help or ideas appreciated.

Yes you can as long as it has been scanned for viruses once installed. Recommend AVG, not Norton as it is a complicated piece of software to use.
