This Dimension could have a sound card installed,
radio jacks near top of tower near mouse and keyboard ( on I/O plate )- onboard
Lower down tower in an exspansion slot - sound card

This link to dell shows the sound devices that could be installed

http://support.euro.dell.com/support...os=WW1&osl=EN#

you need to find out exacally what is in your system, these are some Soundblaster audio devices http://uk.europe.creative.com/produc...asp?category=1

Hope this helps

Barbara,
Thanks for replying. There are 5 sound jacks immediately below the mouse and keyboard ports relating to the onboard ADI198x sound. No others. My expansion slots etc are empty.
I have previously linked to Dell to dowload the Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio device. perhaps I will try the Creative Labs 5.1 drivers.

I will let you know how it goes. If you have any other ideas in the meantime - I would be appy to hear!!
Thanks, Angus

Unfortunately the Creative Labs driver could not find a sound card and would not install.
Is my problem one for a computer technician do you think??

First have a look at this
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

If that is correct
Go back to Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...os=WW1&osl=EN#

install the Chipset driver, then RESTART your comp. then install the ADI 198x again.

I'm not too sure on what kind of disc's Dell supply, do you have a recovery disc and a Win XP disc, if this is what you have then Device Manager should install drivers for you. Here is how it works.

Insert recovery disc in CD drive and then close, go to Device Manager, right click problem device, select Update driver and follow prompts. Device manager should find driver on disc and install

Don't forget the Restore Point just in case

hope this helps

Despite all our best efforts - unfortunately there is still no sound, and still no sound device being recognised. New hardware is being identified - just the driver? not recognised by XP.
I will send the desktop to a technician and they can advise whether a physical sound card may work.
Thanks for your advice to date.
Regards,
Angus
