No Sound - soundmax, etc

I'm helping a friend with a computer - there is no sound coming from the speakers. The volume control is gone from all programs>>accessories>>entertainment.

This is a gateway computer on winXP

and in the control panel under Sounds and Audio Devices properties it says No Audio Device under the Volume tab plus everything is greyed out, and under the Audio Tab in Sound Playback it has the default device as Modem #1 Line Playback and there are no others listed in the drop down menu

I checked in the device manager under the sound, video and game controller section, and there are no ?'s or !'s, everything seems to be fine

here is some info from belarc

Main Circuit Board Intel Corporation D865GLC AAC27501-403

Multimedia:
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device

------
I have downloaded #5 on this site http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...5&submit=Go%21

after downloading and installing that file I get the error "Driver not found!" Reeboot your system and run this setup again"

I have also downloaded the drivers directly from gateway, and still can't get any sound. Any ideas on what else to try?????

This means the sound card is being recognised.

I've had the same issue as you have in the past, just uninstall your sound card drivers and then restart the PC / Laptop.
This should then automatically reinstall the drivers for you and it should all then be OK.

The above maybe, because the drivers are not playing ball, uninstall the drivers from device manager and restart and it should sort it out.

I have tried many times uninstalling the driver, Soundmax Intergrated digital audio reinstalls itself, but still gives me no sound.

here is a list of what is in the device manager , is Soundmax intergrated digital audio the only one I am supposed to uninstall? I also notice there are 2 "audio codecs" is that normal?

Audio Codecs
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SoundMax Intergrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-duplex Audio Device
Video Codecs

Have a look at this
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic.

Hope this helps

Might sound stupid,

Are your speakers plugged in? Are they in the right jack plug?
If everything bookworm and me have suggested, I'd recommend a format of your PC.

Problem solved

yeah the speakers were plugged in - after trying almost every solution possible, i ran across this website as I was searching for more solutions.

I now have sound on the computer - so I will post this in case anyone has a similar problem to mine. taken from http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1018722575

I found this instructions when looking for an answer to this exact same problem, I followed the directions and wala! I now can see my sound card inthe greyed out areas again! Try it out fellas! Carl's solution worked like a charm for me, once I actually read it carefully enough to understand what was going on. It's truly a stroke of genius, and I strongly suggest you try his process before you go reinstalling your entire operating system. To recap in detail (for Windows XP; YMMV): 1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) 2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" 3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" 4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." 5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" 6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. 7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Select this item, and select "Next>". 8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. 9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart. Thank you for posting this solution; it has saved endless hours of reinstallation, and perhaps a marriage as well.
