3 full re-installations later...

Has anyone had this happening to them?

After following the error report link I discovered that my problem was the BLASTER worm. (Yes again!) I formatted my drive and re-instlled XP but, as soon as I reconnected to the internet, the problem re-occured (even with the firewall on and Norton Pro running).

I had to fully re-install 3 times, download one of the security patches on another computer, install it, update the virus definitions and what have you to sort it all out.

Well, touch wood, it seems to be almost ok now, but...

Everytime I connect to the internet (IE 6, Outlook Express 6, MSN Messenger 6.2) a window opens (MSN Messenger in the title bar)which says "A newer version is available, you must download to continue" there are then two buttons "Download" & "What's new" and an "ok" button. (The window cannot be closed).

I've already downloaded the very latest MSN Mesenger (6.2) and installed it with no problems.

I had followed the link previously and it appeared to be downloading MSN Messenger, but problems again followed.

Thanks for reading this far.

The window can be closed by activating Task Manager and ending the task. Although it's do-able it's a pain in the butt.

Am I right in assuming that this is a worm/virus trying to infect my computer and have me download the really nasty part?

Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon? (I'd be suprised if not).

Is it a legitimate program which I should download?

Thanks for any feedback about this.
------
By the way, NORTON PRO picked up 4 emails with the 32.Netsky.Q@mm virus yesterday, all from bogus email addresses and I don't know that many people who would want to contact me!

Could I just add... I can understand people having a problem with an omnipotent company such as Microsoft, who, it seems, we can't survive without, but, Mr. Gates is still the richest guy in the world, Microsoft still runs the world and the only people who suffer from the worm producer's ire are the end users. Just think what these (obviously talented) people could do if they turned their abilities to something useful.

Are you using a legitimate XP disk or Pirate?

Never trust any pop up windows from the internet that tell you that you need an upgrade.

Never trust emails from Microsoft that have links to upgrades.
