USB problems in WinXP Home

I have a new Windows XP Home computer. I have been working on getting it configured properly, but have run into some problems installing a couple of USB devices.

The computer has six USB 2.0 ports -- four in the back and two in the front. I have successfully connected an external hard drive, a Zip drive, and my iPaq Pocket PC. However, I cannot get my HP PhotoSmart P1000 printer or Epson Perfection 1260 scanner to be recognized by the computer.

I have installed all the drivers and software for both devices, but when I connect them to the USB ports -- carefully following all instructions for installation -- they are never recognized by the computer. I have tried them in other ports, including ones that I know work, and still no luck.

Any suggestions on what I can try or any references to sites where a good explanation of USB 2.0 troubleshooting might be available would be appreciated.

You might go to device manager first and see if there are any conflits in there. Also, here is a site that explains some things.

you may also need to upgrade the chipset drivers(ie, if you have a via chipset, you can go to viaarena.com and download the latest 4in1 drivers). This CAN help some issues, if other methods do not work.
