No sound for itunes -avRack?
Yesterday I downloaded the latest itunes, with Quicktime.
Everything was running just fine. Then in a misguided clean-up operation, I uninstalled a bunch of programs I thought were merely taking up space on the computer. One of these was something called AVRack (with a Crab logo).
This morning when I turned on the computer there was an install wizard starting up automatically, but said it couldn't find something and prompted me to finish.
I tried itunes, but a window came up saying:
"itunes has detected a problem with you sound device" and something about Audio/Video. Then the tunes wouldn't play.
The same is true for Windows Media Player, when I try to play a CD it says:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." and more information gives me a 0xC00D11BA error.
I have since reinstalled AVRack AC97 from Realtek website and saved it in my Program Files, but the problem persists (for itunes and media player, as above) and AC97 doesn't seem to be recognised in the Sound/Audio part of Control Panel which says No Sound Device. Do I have it in the wrong place?
I have also uninstalled itunes and Quicktime.
What am I doing wrong? Please help. Thanks
Ba.

Well, I think I did that - went to Realtek and downloaded the crab thingy, it's on my desktop (It has a really crappy space age media player with it). But in the control panel it still says No sound device and itunes continues to tell me I have a problem.
Do I need it to be running somewhere in particular - or initiate it somehow?

OK. Just did some more exploring and within Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware > Legacy Audio Drivers > Properties > Audio Devices I found Audio for Realtek AC'97 Audio, and within its properties it says "Status: Driver is enabled but has not been started"
How do I start it? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Do you see the AVRack on your listed programs ? Also what happen if you use WMP ? And you didn't mess around with your bios setting , did you ?
Open Device Manager.
Double-click Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your sound device, and then click Properties.
If you do not know the name of your sound device, consult the documentation that came with it.
Under Device usage, make sure that Use this device (enable) is selected.
Click OK.
Restart your computer if you are prompted to do so
Open Sounds and Audio Devices Properties in Control Panel.
On the Audio tab, click your sound device in the Default device lists under both Sound Playback and Sound Recording.
Open Device Manager.
Double-click Sound, video, and game controllers.
Double-click your sound device.
Click the Properties tab, and then double-click Audio Devices.
Click your sound device, and then click Properties.
Click Use audio features on this device.
Click OK until you return to Device Manager.
Restart your computer

It does appear in the all programs list, under RealTek Sound Manager
If I try to play a CD on WMP, a column of ! appear - one next to each track. Then a window pops up:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." and more information gives me a 0xC00D11BA error.
Also says:
Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Bios setting? What's that? I didn't mess with any settings as far as I know.

Alright, problem (as per f*cken usual) solved the easy way. I got confused by your suggestions - which comes from having no clue about computers. So I found the original installation disc and re-installed the sound driver from there. Somehow this worked. None-the-wiser as to what was actually wrong in the first place.
Thanks for your help anyway. Go Leafs! ...never thought I'd say that - more of a Canucks man, myself.

Okay good to know and glad its working again , Though if you don't know about a program ? A good practise would be to ask first before uninstalling anything
