Click download drivers, select AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Power PC Package, then select the top Audio Driver and install it. You will more than likely have to reboot: -

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

Your right about iQuon waste of time, sending me to Gigabyte, but the chipset is a Via and you can get the audio driver from Via, go here http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...SubCatID =104

all instructions to install are shown.

Hope this helps

Done some more digging, the chipset leads to boards with Realtek ALC655 go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

download the (Excutable file) save to desktop, double click to install

The site is slow

Don't forget the System Restore Point just in case

Hope this helps

hi i have downloaded the driver from realtek. this is the message i am now getting:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

once the driver was installed, went to control panel> sounds and audio devices> audio tab. in this window you can choose default audio playback and recording devices, but i did nothing for a while because i was thinking of hard ware. but when i opened the drop down boxes for playback and recording the driver was there so this part of the control panel must treat the driver as a device rather than the sound card. nb the setting it was on had it trying to use part of the 56kbps modem for sound why would this be? hope this helps others. pete.

Thanks for the feedback, this appears to be a common problem with audio driver, even after installing, perishing Windows does it's own thing. Thanks once again

Cheers
