Direct 3D/video card problems

Hi

I'm new to these forums and XP so please be patient with me.

Recently bought a PC off Ebay which was said to have following spec:-

iQon Desktop Pc

PS/2 Mouse
PS/2 Keyboard

Hardware

Amd Athlon 64 3000+ Processor 512kb L2 Cache

1 Gb Corsair 400mhz 3200 DDR Memory

80 Gb Hard Disk Drive

Phillips Dvd-Rw 16x

1.44'' Floppy Disk Drive

Unichrome 2D/3D Intergrated 64mb Graphics Card

6x Usb 2.0

MSI K8TM-ILSR Motherboard

http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...odel=K8TM-ILSR

6 Ch. Audio

10/100 LAN Network

56k Modem

Software

Windows Xp Media Edition 2005
Norton System Works 2006
Microsoft Office 2003 Microsoft Works Suite 2005
Microsoft Works 8
Nero 7.0
Power Dvd 6.0
Adobe Photoshop CS2
Adobe ImageReady CS2
Adobe Bridge CS2

I expected to just take it home and plug it in and play but oh no...

First problem we noticed was no sound. It didn't appear to have an audio device, so we bought a new sound card and installed that and sound all ok. Although having had a browse of these forums I think I should have come here first.

Next and current problem is Direct3D not working. DXDIAG shows under display option - manufacturer, chip type, dac type all n/a.
Device manager shows yellow ? under other devices Video controller (vga compatible) unknown manufacturer etc - the drivers are not installed.

Tried getting Windows to search for drivers - not found. Tried downloading drivers from IQON website - no good.

DVD's play using PowerDVD but not with Media Player. Games that require direct 3d will not play.

I'm now assuming I need to download a driver from MSI site but I can't tell which driver I need.

Ebay seller refusing a refund.

Please Help !

Run a complete system recovery on the Pc, start from scratch, if you're having all these problems, a system recovery will correct them all, and as you've brought it from Ebay, this could have the persons stuff on there still.

good idea but :-

I would presumably lose all software then and have no installation discs and it was partly the list of software that attracted us to PC.

Looking at your boards specs I fail to see a driver for the Unichrome display adapter, it appears to be part of the chipset driver (?) which is the 4-1 driver on the bottom of the d/load page. ( Link ) it's not going to be a world beater in the graphics circle thats for sure, good news is it looks to be a good board, and has an 8x AGP slot if you want to upgrade to a decent video card. The lack of software disks will come back to haunt you if you ever need to format, I presume you got the XP disk with the purchase? Well I hope you did. If not you can find your XP CD key and some other software keys by running PC Wizard Good to see you got the sound working with the card but sorry to say the board has perfectly good onboard sound.

Is the video all that has the yellow ! beside it in Device manager?

ANZAC

Thanks for your info but I'm still getting nowhere. Tried downloading the WInXP 64 Bit form the link you gave me but WinRAR won't unpack it - says the file is damaged. Tried it a few times in case it had not downloaded properly.

Yes, video is the only thing with yellow ? beside it.

I agree I will regret having no software installation disks. I'm already regretting buying the whole thing to be honest and wished I'd bought from new.

I will run PCWIZARD tomorrow to check what set up I have.

If we were to purchase a new video card - which would you recommend ?

Do you have 64 bit windows XP? If not you should be d/loading the 32 bit driver.

Personally I prefer Nvidia graphics cards, each to his own, I would say to run most modern games you will need at least a GeForce 6600 series at the minimum, to get best results though I would look to a GeForce 6800 series card, the forceware drivers for these cards are easy to install and regularly updated. Alternatively there are ATi Radeon cards, a lot of these do not support sm3 which a lot of newer games require. Budget will be the main factor in your decision, if $$$ are not a concern you may like to look at the latest releases in GeForce cards the 6800GS or the 7800GS series.

thanks for the info.

I thought I was getting somewhere but ...

Downloaded the 32 bit file. It downloaded, expand, installed something. Said I needed to restart PC before I could use. Did that. Tried running Setup command in VIA folder and nothing happens.

even tried downloading the MIS live update utility, but that has found nothing that needs updating.

also tried downloading from IQON site and got this message in S2setup.log
'Could not find an enumerate device to match hardware.'

Here is report from PCWizard

Update : Think I'm getting somewhere - downloaded VGA driver K8M800 from MSI website
and it installed and changed screen settings. However started to test it with Simpsons game demo and it froze. Hopefully that was just the game.
