File Deletion Problem in XP
Hello
After downloading a large (720 MB) film through Kazaa I have found that I cannot play, rename, move or delete it.
It comes up with the error message that it is being used by another program. This is not the case! I have even started the computer in safe mode to try and overcome this but with no success.
Also Kazaa does not recognize that this file exists in "My shared folder", although it does.
I understand that the latest SP1 patch from Windows affects the memory management of the computer and I am worried that it is causing the problem.
If anyone has had prior experiance of this problem or (fingers crossed) a suggestion on how to solve it, you may just save my sanity.

None Fix:
The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.
This problem manifests itself by causing Explorer to read the entire contents of an AVI file, regarless of its size or location any time the mouse pointer is hovered over it, or an attempt is made to access it in windows explorer. This causes 'permission denied' errors when trying to simply move, copy or delete these files as they cannot be changed while Explorer has an open handle on them.
This also causes a DoS situation where large AVI's are stored on remote shares and Explorer keeps reading the files from beginning to end each time they are accessed.
To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cl
asses\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. This will not effect your ability to play files, get file attributes, or even view thumbnails. Say goodbye to all explorer.exe 100% CPU issues.
Just an extra note, if you do a "search" for this key it will not be found, look for it manually it is very easy to find. As always newbie or not, if you FUBAR your registry its your own fault. This fix does work, I use it and have applied it to many XP machines. Now go ahead and fix this royal pain in the ass!

Hi,
If you still have problems deleting the file just boot up your PC with a command prompt, then use the del command to get rid of the offending file...
Works for me evry time!

I don't want to dis-respect augie2's reply, but what the hell is that, don't reply if you don't feel like typing (cut and past in this case did not CUT it), anyways.
To all of us / you who installed Kazaa and after a while were sick and tired of the problem it caused them so they want to get right of it. Kazaa does act like virus, I said act as so you have to approach it is, go to Add / Remove program and remove Kazaa from your system, Also download all the other component that get installed with Kazaa like "save Now" , "Download", and that awfull "NewDotNet". Then get a demo or trial version of Pest Patrol from here:
http://www.pestpatrol.com
run the software and it will get right of all the unwanted / pest ,, this will get right of you Kazaa and all trace of it,, then you can freely delete you file.
cheers
