WXP install

have win xp Pro which I have attempted to install both as an update or a fresh install. The problem in either case is the same. On a a fresh, formatted, HD I had windows 2000. I used my wxp cd to try installing it, both as an update or a fresh install. After the sw went thru serial # and had installed the installation files, it rebooted, told me it was going to boot for the first time, went thru a hw check, and then gave me a blank screen ( not the bsod). just blank, as if it was searching for something but would not continue the install. There is nothing unusual about this computer. As I said, it has run W 2000 Pro, smoothly for the past year and a half. Thoughts?
