Question Remote Access

hi All

I have been trying to setup remote access on my PC at home so I can connect to my computer at work. Both computers are setup with Windows XP Pro

At home and and work I have setup a LAN. They access the internet thru an ADSL modem (similar to a DSL modem from what I understand).

The remote access works fine within each of the networks (ie I can connect from 1 pc at home to the other PC at home, same at work).

What I can't figure out is how to connect from a PC in the network at home to the PC I use at work. I first off tried using the IP address for the ADSL modem but that doesn't work. I have had a look on Microsofts support web site & from what I can see on there I have to setup a VPN before the remote access thing will work. For the VPN to connect from one computer to the other it mentions something about having a remote access server running. I couldn't find anymore info on the remote access server side of things though. Is this something I need to download or is it included win XP?, do I need to open ports or change NAT setting in the modems?,or am I going about this the wrong way

Network at home has two PCs + ADSL modem (they all connect into a HUB and IP addresses range from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3)

Network at work is larger, about 15PCs + server + ADSL Modem. Again they all plug into a Hub, internal IPs range from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.254(the modem).

Both cases the netmask = 255.255.255.0, DNS & Gateway addresses = internal modem address (if this makes any difference)

Not sure what other info would be helpfull.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Kind Regards
Gitch

Hi,

I to would love to know the answer to this one!

I use RAS on a Win2000 Server for remote access... But have never tried this with two home LAN's

Is this possible when you have NAT running private IP addresses at both ends???

I suppose it would be. All I have to do it figure out what port the VPN would connect thru and open that port. I can tell them modem what internal IP to forward any info on a certain port to.

Was you RAS part of win 2000 server?. I think if I can get the VPN to connect I should be able to get the rest of it to go. Just need the RAS software installed on my PC

Cheers
