Sound properties

Can you please help me with this, I had a virus in my computer, and now when I go to the control panel:
sound properties= none of the panels let me change anything, how can I get this fixed? I have al ready downloaded the latest driver from the manufacturers site, re-started computer and not change, any ideas??? please help.

I'm not sure what you mean, I don't have a lot of computer knowledge, all I know is that my computer is an HP, under control panel and I just noticed my task bar does not show the sound icon either.
any ideas?

O ok, sorry, well my is a pavilion 720n, and I did restore it to original set up, the computer is almost 2 years, as per the properties, my shows not device ( under volume tab.
