SVCHOST is killing me!!!

AN19E/AN19C motherboard, AMD Athlon 1700+, Xabre 200 Vid Card 64MB, 512 MB ram, Windows XP Pro, 1.47 GHz

Well, recently I had my computer build by one of my friends with these specs, he built and installed everything correctly. When I got the computer, I started using it, and right away began to notice something. After I boot the computer, everything is working fine for a while, and in any amount of time, it hits, sometimes while Im playing video games, sometimes while im watching movies, listening to music, exc..... what hits, is the svchost starts lagging, shooting CPU levels up to 60 or even 80 at like 30- 60 second intervals. It is really nasty and lags a couple seconds at times. I tried ending the process, which I know is a bad thing to do, which would kill the sound on my computer. I can not figure out what it is, I do not have a firewall on my computer. The only thing I can do to end it, is restart the computer, which helps it out only for an hour or 2. Well, I hope I gave y'all enough information.

ccsteiny,

Sounds like you've got some extraneous background services running! I'm not sure what exactly SVCHOST does, but it's used for a number of services and it's common to see multiple instances of it in the services list in task manager. I won't try to walk you through the wonderful world of service-disabling, but I'll point you in the right direction...

The services guide at www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm is the one that I use exclusively. It's in depth and accurate (and blkviper is a pretty decent guy). There's also a number of other service-disabling guides at www.tweakxp.com. Skim through a guide, then start disabling services...chances are, you'll disable the cpu-hogging service!

Hope that helps!!

Ok, thanks for your help. I think I am going to reformat my computer, and/ or add extra fans.... maybe my cpu isnt cooling good enough and it may be too hot. But, I will look at that website.
