Boot up and mouse problems

My system uses an AMD XP 3200 32 bit, 1GB RAM, and two 160 GB hard drives. N Vidia FX5600 256 Meg. XP Home. I use NOD32 AV and scans using that and other online scan services find no virus or spyware on my system. I have tried a new mouse and keyboard without curing my problem The mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse optical, hard wired to the PS2 post. Using the USB port instead of the PS2 port for the mouse makes NO difference.

At present, as I boot from cold, it fails to boot at all. Black screen and LED's on the keyboard flicker in a random manner. So no alternative but to press reboot.

On boot #2 Windows starts after a pause in the middle between the system starting displaying the memory CPU and drives etc, and windows opening. However although my PS 2 optical mouse lights up, the curser is locked in the centre of the screen as the desktop opens and all the programmes boot normally. The LED's on the wired keyyboard blink erratically during the boot process. Time to hit reboot for the third time.

On boot #3, I still have a dark screen and a 40 second wait as it boots and Windows opens, but when the mouse curser appears it will now move under control as it should do! No erratic flickering from my Logitec Wired keyboard this time and all works fine. It follows this 3 boot system every time I boot from cold. It never varies!

Incidentally, once it has booted for the third time and worked correctly, any subsequent reboots for any reason work perfectly!

So, is it a hard drive issue? Is it a registry issue?

See my next post for a copy of my registy. I had to split it as it went over the rooms post limits.

Tom.
