Red face [Part 1] SOUND PROBLEMS Intel 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller
Okay, I am not sure what has happened to my computer but my audio no longer works. I have manually go into the sounds from the device manager and install the driver (I think) again and again every time I reboot my system. In addition, I have attempted for the past two days to update my computer by going to Microsoft's Update website but there are never any successful downloads/updates. They find 24 CRITICAL/IMPORTANT UPDATES but as the process completes, it says the following updates did not successfully update. Can anyone help? Processor = Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70Ghz
RAM = 1.6GHz, 256MB (was 512...my husband removed 256 and put it in the other computer for gaming purposes)
Intel 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller (have to reinstall every boot or
there is no sound output)

If you have a Win disc try a System File Check go to Run / type "sfc /scannow" ( without the quotes and note the space after sfc ) have your Win disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files. It will run and close on completion, no alerts or messages will show.

these are the drivers for your OptiPlex DX240

First get the Chipset - Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility - install then Restart your comp

Second get the ADI 1885 audio driver and install

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING EACH DRIVER JUST IN CASE

Sound Problem Persists...
I did all the things that you asked me to do except the Win disk but that is because I did not get a copy from the creator of my system/software . I did download and install the chipset utility and the audio driver that you specified but nothing...still can't hear any sounds . I hope there is someone out there can help me. By the way...THANKS A BUNCH BARBARA FOR YOUR HELP...can you think of anything else I can do ?

Okay, I tried the process again and the audio controller was replaced with something else. The Intel 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller was replaced with SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.

So, what would you suggest? By the way, I wanted to thank you for instructing me to set restore points because they did come in handy.

Should I attempt to use the SoundMAX or should I go back to the Intel Audio Controller?
