constant restart

System always comes up with the message

to finish setting up your new hardware, you must restart your computer.

this is after NOT installing any new harware.

However, both CD drives show as not working & the primary and secondary controlers state that the system must be restart for them to work

Any ideas?????

Thanks

Ther are several things to try. Reboot and when the first startup screen displays hit the del(ete) key till you get into BIOS. The first screen you'll see will display info on secondary master and slave. If they are not there, then you should check your hardware, cabling especially. Reseat the connectors.

You said "However, both CD drives show as not working & the primary and secondary controlers state that the system must be restart for them to work" If by that you mean you went to device manager and got this info there?

Try uninstalling the drivers first and reboot to install XP's generic drivers. Please post back on your progress.

Thanks for the reply - however been there, done that to both of your very good ideas.

I am thinking that there must be some thing in the registry that is causing this - but do not have any idea where or what.

I am afaid that I am looking at a fresh and clean reinstall.

Thanks,

One possibility is that the memory in your computer is bad. Did you try to do a reinstall of your operating system from the CD?
