Changing File Ownership

Hi:

I am trying to take ownersjip of files that were in 'My Documents' on an old system but are not 'owned' on the new system. I put the old HDD into an external case with the notion that I would move the files once the new system was stable. Now when I try to copy them I get access denied errors etc. I can take ownership of the files by coming up in SafeMode and changing the file ownership settings and then the file access settings but there are a ton of files that need to be changed so I'll be here for a while unless I can change them in batch or script a way to flip the security permission.

I tried to use the XCACLS script to take ownership of directories and sub-directories but
I get an 'error -2147217406' which I think is caused when it encounters a files and it cannot figure out who the current file owner when it goes to change the ownership attributes. Link to tool follows:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825751

Before I clear my calendar for the next month I'm hoping there might be some suggestions for this little issue.

Thanks in advance

Regards

If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File Sharing

1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.

3. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
