Realtek Hd recording prob

Hi..
Pc only purchased in Dec.. but the soundcard supplied with it realtek HD has never ever allowed anything to be recorded the controls for record are all greyed out..
Never worried me cos I have an external soundcard to record with but never the less would like to try and fix it any ideas?

Have windows media xp
media center edition
version 2002 service pack 2
